When the doorbell rings and a parcel deliveries, it usually contains articles that may please our hearts but are not necessary for survival. This is different with the CARE packages. Because these meanwhile secure the basis of life for people and regions – especially in the areas that are already affected by the climate crisis and are feeling the effects. That’s why I’m all the more happy that I was able to open such an important package as part of the # CARE4Climate campaign and introduce it to you.
In the course of the # CARE4Climate campaigns, I am opening a very special package that is supposed to ensure the survival of people.
CARE became known mainly through the CARE packages, which were distributed to the European population by American aid organizations after the Second World War. The contents of the parcels consisted of staple groceries and had a value of 15 US dollars, thus securing basic supplies for a family for a month. CARE is now one of the largest private aid organizations and has been fighting hardship, poverty and injustice for more than 70 years.
CARE is there when the survival of people and regions is affected. Unfortunately, natural disasters such as floods, droughts and typhoons are increasing due to the climate crisis. The classic CARE packages, on the other hand, are no longer available. More important to the organization is “help to self-help”, which helps people in the long term. Aid goods are no longer imported, but are bought locally. That supports the local economy, the aid arrives faster and is more effective. There is also a special focus on empowering girls and women and gender equality.
As an aid organization, CARE depends on donations from the population. Every penny helps to reach as many people as possible.
We in Germany are not yet directly affected by the effects of the climate crisis. It looks completely different in the southern regions of the world. The industrialized countries are primarily responsible for the man-made crisis and that is why we should be ready to support those affected. You can easily do this with any donation as part of the # CARE4Climate campaign.
So what do the packages for the # CARE4Climate campaign look like?
Extreme conditions make it increasingly difficult for many smallholders in this world to secure their livelihood. CARE would like to draw attention to this in the spirit of the CARE4Climate campaign with a special package. The content symbolizes certain help from CARE.
A mangrove sapling, for example, can serve as a protective wall against floods in certain areas. They put their immense roots in salt water and grow meters high. The package also contains symbolic seeds that CARE is distributing to the smallholders. It is important to CARE that old, displaced plants are reactivated, which have already been displaced by Western influences. With a chlorine tablet you can recycle contaminated water and make it drinkable.
The CARE package also contains important information sheets on emergency kits. What do you do in the event of a flood? The information sheets are also illustrated so that people who may not be able to read can also follow the instructions.
We should feel a responsibility to those who are directly affected by the climate crisis.
For me, the CARE package is an important reminder. How lucky can we consider ourselves that we have not yet felt the effects of the climate crisis immediately ?! It is all the more important that we are aware of our responsibility.
