“Longevity is an essential pillar”

Sustainability and longevity are the central messages of the device manufacturers this autumn. Also the Miele innovations for 2022 focus on the question: How can dishwashers, refrigerators, etc. work even more energy-efficiently? An answer has been found for at least one topic.

“Quality that is ahead of its time.” – What do you think of this advertising slogan from Miele’s new 2021/22 campaign? Possibly futuristic built-in appliances for the kitchen that create masterful menus without much outside intervention? This is even true: Miele has been working with the “Smart Food ID“In selected ovens, which detects by camera which ingredients have been pushed into the oven and automatically adjusts the temperature, program and cooking time accordingly. Nevertheless, the Miele slogan means something else.

Miele: Appliance service life examined over 20 years – as the only manufacturer

Whole 20 years lifespan the premium appliance manufacturer Miele attests to its years in the kitchen. The global corporation from Gütersloh is testing this extensively – according to its own information more than any other company in the kitchen industry. Dishwashers, vacuum cleaners or stoves are used in elaborate laboratory processes demanding endurance tests subjected; around 150 devices are in continuous operation at the same time, explains Dr. Reinhard Zinkann, one of the two managing partners of the Miele Group. After a specified number of cycles the results can be used for around 20 years extrapolated will. Only the best devices make it into the market – and are thus some time ahead of the competition, at least on paper.

Miele does not go to great lengths to test its products simply because it would have a reputation to lose with its world-famous name. But also because the company emphasizes, “Longevity is the real sustainability“- and by the way, we have been living this since the company was founded 122 years ago. But because sustainability has become an indispensable part of the current debate in almost every industry – justifiably -, the topic is now also at the top of Miele’s agenda for Miele’s new products for 2022.

Miele innovations for 2022: G 7000 dishwasher with energy label A

A bit of window dressing is certainly part of the process here and there when it comes to sustainability. This is no different at Miele than it is with its competitors. How to present “the most environmentally and climate-friendly dryersthat the company has ever built ”. One would almost like to argue that research has always made sense, an already existing thing to improve sustainably.

But so be it: for other points like the dishwashers of the G 7000 series Miele really did a great job. “Almost all” models of the current generation meet this enormously ambitious energy efficiency targets of the new class A., and those that are still missing should follow in October.

This is made possible by the “EcoPower technology“, For example optimized spray arms with a more precise alignment of the spray jets, as well as a highly efficient filter system. One additional insulation reduces heat loss – this in turn also minimizes the energy required to heat the water. Thus, the Water and electricity consumption significantly reduced (ECO program: 8.4 l).

Interestingly, the entire industry does not seem to have as hard to do with dishwashers as it does with refrigerators, which in many places have slipped from A +++ to E (on a scale of AF). Even Siemens and Bosch can use the Energy efficiency scale A show.

AutoDos with PowerDisk: now also in an eco version

However, that is still unique AutoDos dosing system with integrated PowerDisk from Miele, which is filled with powder granulate and – depending on how dirty the dishwasher is and how full it is – independently the addition of detergent is dosed. In the Miele Innovations 2022, the group is now introducing the fact that the amount of granulate can be reduced by hand if there is only a little soiling. In addition, the PowerDisk containers will be made from in the future Post-consumer recyclate (PCR) manufactured – i.e. plastics that are produced and processed by the end user.

If you go all out, you can use Miele’s own cleaning and washing-up liquid to fill the PowerDisk, which from next year will also be called “PowerDisk All in 1 Eco“Will be available. They are free of microplastics and their packaging is largely made from recycled plastic.

Miele innovations for 2022: cooling with “PerfectFresh Active” and “FlexiTray”

The wording of the new products from the device manufacturers is somewhat similar. Where used to be XXL fridges were advertised because of the space they had and the majestic sight in the kitchen, one now hears the argument that people “wanted to buy in advance”.

Also popular – and therefore no less true – is that rigid food waste, under which around 12 million tons of food are thrown away every year in Germany alone; 50% of them in private households. This can be counteracted with refrigerators that store foods such as fruit and vegetables “keep fresh for up to five times longer“. With all due respect and a wink: that, too, has always been the point of a refrigerator.

Nevertheless, one can still be amazed at what the industry comes up with every year for their cooling devices even more efficient and environmentally friendly to design. The system is one of the Miele innovations for 2022 PerfectFresh Active, which was presented last year. It is a small water tank that is attached above the fresh produce drawer and is an alternative every time the door is opened every 90 minutes – with a fine spray covers the freshly stored goods in order to maintain the quality of the food and to prevent it from drying out.

That sounds almost wasteful, but it isn’t: only 120 milliliters of water is the size of the small tank that only needs to be refilled every two to three months. Due to the low temperatures, undesirable contamination can be ruled out; In addition, the tank is easy to clean.

Also included in the Miele innovations for 2022: that FlexiTray; a glass shelf that can be rotated like a rondel on the entire shelf. In this way, glasses and containers that are stored further back in the refrigerator can be easily fetched. AEG already presented a similar idea at IFA 2017 with the “SpinView Shelf”.

Miele innovations 2022: Cooking with what the (plant) refrigerator can offer

In its Miele innovations for 2022, Miele not only takes care of what is in the refrigerator, but also what goes into the saucepan. For a green footprint, the company relies on green start-ups, which the group purchases and financially supports.

In recent years, a collaboration with the “Plantcube by Agrilution result, a kind of “plant refrigerator” for the home, in which herbs, microgreens and salads can be found when needed grow and harvest independently permit. Also on board is the recipe app “KptnCook“, Which combines its own recipes from food stored in the refrigerator and thus wants to counteract waste.

The Miele company: sustainability also applies to one’s own footprint

If you want to be sustainable, it is best to start with yourself. Miele also sees it this way: up to End of 2021 all locations should go Work CO2-neutralas far as “Scope 1” (own greenhouse gas emissions) and “Scope 2” (emissions from energy suppliers) are concerned. They are well on their way there and will “in all likelihood make it”, explains Dr. Reinhard Zinkann. Dr. Markus Miele, second managing company, corrected: it will definitely work.

the four steps for more sustainability at Miele provide that your own energy consumption is reduced first. At the same time, efforts are being made to produce electricity themselves and feed it into the manufacture of the devices. If that is no longer enough, get external ones Renewable energy sources. And only the rest – which at the moment, as with all businesses, should not be so small – will be over Compensation projects paid off in order to receive the “climate neutral” seal.

It takes more time to reduce emissions from “Scope 3”, namely the greenhouse gases caused by electricity consumption and the use of Miele appliances End users: inside At home. Energy-efficient Miele appliances are intended to remedy this – by 2030, emissions are to be reduced by 15% compared to 2019.

It remains to be seen whether these lofty goals will be crowned with perseverance and success. Then the new slogan could be: Sustainability that is ahead of its time.
